My love affair with hemp is what drew me to using Reclaimed Vintage U.S. Military textiles. The U.S. Government formed the War Hemp Industries Department to subsidize hemp cultivation and grew about a million acres of hemp as part of that program. The USDA produced a film called "Hemp for Victory" to encourage U.S. farmers to grow hemp for the war effort.

Many people do not know that if you were a farmer in America and you didn't grow hemp you would be jailed or kicked out of the country as a non patriot.

Ten years ago while traveling in Japan, I became obsessed with these beautiful textiles called Boro which are indigo dyed hemp that has been mended + repaired ... the most stunning recycling tradition i had ever seen.
I knew I wanted to do a project around this textile and while designing this collection for Environment Furniture ... it became a core element of the collection. A celebration of cultures, past + present recycling traditions. |
|
It was a dream come true to work with Environment Furniture. Our shared vision of independently designing with reclaimed military + our beliefs + intentions for design were perfectly aligned.
This has begun a beautiful collaborative journey ... Environment by Heather Heron.
